National Safer Internet Day
Tuesday, February 10 was National Safer Internet Day, a reminder that while the internet makes banking, shopping, and connecting easier than ever, it also requires us to stay alert. At The Savings Bank, keeping our customers’ information safe is a responsibility we take seriously.
Cybercriminals don’t just target large corporations. In fact, individuals and small businesses are often their preferred targets because a single compromised password or click can open the door to financial fraud. The good news? A few simple habits can go a long way in protecting your personal and financial information.
Start with strong passwords. Avoid using the same password across multiple sites, especially for online banking, email, and shopping accounts. Strong passwords are long, unique, and avoid personal details like birthdays or pet names. Consider using a reputable password manager to help keep track of them securely.
Next, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA adds a layer of protection by requiring a second step like a code sent to your phone or a biometric scan. This way, even if someone gets your password, MFA can stop them from accessing your account. Remember to NEVER share an MFA code with anyone else!
Also be sure to be cautious with emails, texts, and calls. Phishing scams are designed to look legitimate and create urgency. Messages claiming there’s a problem with your account or offering unexpected refunds should be treated with caution. As a reminder: your bank will NEVER ask for your full account number, password, or one-time security codes via email or text.
Furthermore, keeping these devices up to date can help stop security breaches. Software updates aren’t just about new features. They often include important security and bug fixes. Make sure your phone, computer, apps, and antivirus software are updated regularly to reduce vulnerabilities. Some devices and apps may even allow you to turn on automatic updates.
Lastly, you should monitor your accounts regularly by reviewing your bank and credit card statements every month. If you see a transaction you don’t recognize, report it right away. The sooner the suspicious activity is identified, the easier it is to resolve.
At The Savings Bank, we invest in advanced security tools to help protect your accounts, but online safety works best as a partnership. Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to pause, review your digital habits, and make changes. If you ever have any questions about protecting your accounts or if you notice something unusual, our team is here to help! Simply reach out to us during normal business hours at 1-800-582-2265.
