What is Financial Preparedness?
September is National Preparedness Month, a time dedicated to thinking about how we can be better prepared for emergencies and unexpected events. While preparedness often brings to mind things like severe weather, emergency supplies and evacuation plans, there’s another important part of being ready for the unexpected: your finances.
Financial preparedness means having a plan for how you will manage your money when life doesn’t go according to plan. Emergencies can take many forms. A storm could damage your home or vehicle, an unexpected expense could strain your monthly budget, or an interruption in income could make it more difficult to keep up with regular bills.
Being financially prepared doesn’t mean you can anticipate every possible emergency. Instead, it means understanding your financial situation and thinking ahead about how you would handle unexpected circumstances.
But why does it matter? When an emergency happens, there are often many decisions that need to be made quickly. Financial concerns can add another layer of stress to an already difficult situation. Having a better understanding of your finances before an emergency occurs can help you make informed decisions when they matter most.
Financial preparedness can include many different areas of your financial life, from knowing where important financial information is located to understanding your household expenses and available resources. It can also mean thinking about how to access your accounts if your normal routine is disrupted.
Just as every household is different, financial preparedness can look different for everyone. What matters most is taking the time to consider your own circumstances and becoming more familiar with the financial resources available to you.
We know September is a busy month with back to school, but National Preparedness is a good reminder that preparing for the unexpected doesn’t have to happen all at once. If possible this month, take the time to start small steps that can help you become more organized, informed, and confident about your finances.
Throughout September, we will be sharing more information about different aspects of financial preparedness and ways you can help protect yourself and your finances when the unexpected happens.
At The Savings Bank, we are here to help you feel more confident about managing your money both during everyday life, and when things don’t quite go as planned.
