Reflecting on 2023

Reflecting on 2023

While January is usually the time for New Year’s Resolutions, the few weeks before the end of the year are a great time to reflect on the year that’s coming to a close. Reviewing the things that happened in the last year can help you prepare for the next!

Whether you had the year of your life, or a year you would rather fade into obscurity, a reflection of 2023 can be extremely beneficial for your mental health. Consider doing a reflection in three parts: reflecting on the past, contemplating the present, and preparing for the future. Don’t let yourself get hung up on the negatives; this is meant to be an exercise in positivity.

When you reflect on the past, remember to focus on the things that will move you forward and don’t ruminate on anything that will stop progress. Ask yourself:

  • What were your successes?
  • What did you enjoy most?
  • What lessons did you learn?
  • How close were you or did you accomplish any of your goals?

Answering these questions helps you use your experiences as tools for learning. You do not want to go into the New Year focused on the negatives.

Next, you should do a similar exercise for the present. Just because there are only a few days left in the year, does not mean you should ignore your current situation. Ask yourself:

  • What is the overall status of your goals?
  • What do you currently need in your life?
  • How have your experiences over the past year made you who you are right now?

Again, focus on the positive and acknowledge that you may not be the same person you were at the beginning of the year. This might mean that your goals and desires for the next year are completely different.

Lastly, prepare for the future. The new year will be here in a few days, and that means you have completely new opportunities at your doorstep. Ask yourself:

  • What are your new goals?
  • What are you most excited about?
  • Are there any lessons you learned last year that you can apply to this year?

Look at the new year as twelve months of opportunity. Whether you shift your goals completely or work on the same ones as last year, there is no competition with anyone else. Where you are at is where you are supposed to be!

As for The Savings Bank, we would like to thank each one of you for an amazing 2023! And no matter what your goals are for 2024, we hope you will make The Savings Bank part of your journey. Happy New Year!
